The new multi-year registration periods will offer greater choice for registrants, who can secure their domain for a longer term without worrying about regular renewals. It also gives registrars the opportunity to offer a more flexible package for .uk domain names.
Before taking the decision, Nominet consulted with its members and the wider domain name community to ensure their views on whether and how to bring in flexible registrations were taken into account. The consultation showed that the majority of the registrar community supported its introduction. A summary and analysis of the responses can be found here.
The launch date will allow time for registrars opting for multi-year registrations to develop their systems and plan for any impact this will have on their business.
Registrars are free to choose the domain registration periods they offer to .uk customers.
